Adobe demos Photoshop for iPad with real layer support [U]

(Update: video) Adobe at the Photoshop World conference this morning showed off a version of Photoshop for the iPad that could give the tablet real Photoshop image editing. Unlike the mostly filter-based Photoshop Express, the unnamed version would let users add, switch to, and edit layers with an isometric view to show the different layers at a glance. Other additions should bring image objects that can be dragged and rotated as well as a color mixer that allows blending "like a painter."...

Rumor: BlackBerry Messenger to land in the App Store on April 26 [Debunked]

Update: Boy Genius Report gets the official word from RIM; BBM is not coming out for iOS on April 26 (and that 'social media conference' where the CEO spoke? Also imaginary). That doesn't mean it never will, but we've erased that "x" from our calendars.

Rumblings of an iPhone version of BlackBerry Messenger surfaced earlier this month from an unidentified source that provided a tip to BGR. Another unconfirmed source has stepped forward with additional information on the MacRumors forums that points to an April 26 debut of the BlackBerry Messenger app in the App Store.

This latest information purportedly comes from an attendee of a social media conference hosted by RIM in Toronto [which never happened -- see above]. During the presentation, RIM's Co-CEO Jim Balsillie supposedly told those in attendance that BBM would make its way to the iOS App Store on April 26. The source also claims the app would be updated this summer with a new notification system. This last piece may be an indirect reference to iOS 5, which may overhaul Apple's current notification system.

Douse this rumor with some pickling salt, kosher salt and table salt as we cannot verify this April 26 date, nor the existence of a BBM app. Based on earlier leaked information and RIM's move to incorporate Android application emulation in its PlayBook tablet, a move to iOS in the upcoming month is not that far-fetched. Anyone a believer?

The image above was provided to TUAW several weeks ago and should not be considered evidence one way or the other of a BBM app.

AT&T expects to give up some cell sites in T-Mobile deal

AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson said in an interview Wednesday that he expected to shed some cell sites if the buyout of T-Mobile is successful. There would be some markets the carrier "will have to divest," he predicted, although he wasn't willing to guess with the WSJ as to which ones these might be. The carrier has had to trade off cell sites in the past, such as through the buyout of Centennial....

Analysts: Apple may have sold between 5-9 million iPads in Q2

The week after the iPad 2 went on sale, I kept expecting Apple to issue a press release announcing that it had sold a million iPad 2s within X number of days (Apple sold about 2 million of the first version in the first 60 days). However, the first week passed and now, more than two weeks later, Apple has yet to announce any iPad 2 sales. This leads me to believe that Apple won't be announcing any iPad 2 numbers until its next financial conference call later in April.

Of course, lack of hard numbers from Apple doesn't keep analysts from guesstimating just how many iPads were sold in total during Apple's fiscal Q2. Philip Elmer-DeWitt at the Apple 2.0 blog has put together a nice list of analyst estimates. The lowest estimate is 5 million iPads. The highest estimate is a whopping 8.8 million iPads. The average of all estimates is 6.26 million. Those numbers include the 14 days of US iPad 2 sales in Apple's Q2 and two days of international sales.

We'll have to wait until Apple's Q2 earnings call later in April to find out exact numbers, but some of the higher ones don't seem too outrageous considering the the long lines and high demand that still exist for those wanting iPad 2s.

Zapd allows website creation from iPhone sans social networking

Inkd, the startup formerly known as PressPlane, launched Zapd over the weekend. It's a free iOS app that allows you to create and publish websites from your iPhone. "Create beautiful websites. In 60 seconds." the makers of Zapd vow, combining photos with premade layouts to create instant sites, ala Tumblr. Think iWeb for your iPhone.

After launching the app, you're presented with a number of layouts that remind me of various Tumblr sites. You can tap on a text, photo or link widget to add content. Before you publish, you can either sign up for your own Zapd account or link it with your Facebook account. From there, you can preview your site or publish it, sending post announcements to Facebook, Twitter and email at the same time.

Zapd doesn't have the social networking aspects of Tumblr, which makes it a good alternative for someone who wants to make a quick website for sharing with a few people. Though it's geared for iPhone users, those with an iPad 2 can also take advantage of the photo features. It's simple enough that those less tech-savvy members of your family can use it without confusion to make a nice-looking mobile photo album or travel journal.

Open iPad GarageBand projects on your Mac

Songs created with the iPad version of GarageBand can not be opened with the Mac version (at least not at the time of writing). I've found a kludgy workaround that will allow you to open at least part of your project on your Mac.

Basically you just need to edit the version number embedded in the project file. I've posted the full step-by-step details to my blog.

Here are the steps:
  • Right-click a project and select 'Show Package Contents.'
  • Find the projectData file and open it with the Plist Editor (or a text editor if you don't have the Developer Tools installed).
  • Find the version key with the value 45000 and change that to 40000.
  • Save the file.
That's it! The project will now open, albeit with a bunch of warning messages and certain things ...
